Upgrade the 3ComImpact External Digital Modem to Firmware Version 2.02 on a PC

(For 3ComImpacts with the 2.x platform which are 3C871 and 3C872. Upgrade paths for the 3C870 are no longer available)

Upgrading your 3ComImpact digital modem requires two main steps.

• Install the latest software
• Upgrade the firmware

Note the difference between the terms firmware and software. Software is the program that runs on your computer and is used to communicate with the digital modem. Firmware resides in the digital modem and controls the behavior of the digital modem.

There is a README.TXT included which has the 2.02 Release notes that cover the new features and fixes for 2.02. Besure to upgrade the 3Com software first, then follow the procedures to upgrade the 3ComImpact firmware to 2.02.

Procedures:

1. Remove the current 3ComImpact directory. (If you do not already have that version of firmware and software on diskette, you may want to make a copy.) Remember to remove the icons from the program group.
2. After you have downloaded the file Impct202.exe - extract by executing the file in a new, empty directory.

Software install:

1. For Windows 3.x, select Run from the File menu. For Windows 95, select Run from the Start menu.
2. In the Run dialog box, type c:\ setup (type the directory path after c:\ ) Click OK. The 3ComImpact Set Up dialog box appears.
3. Click Continue. The Path dialog box appears.
4. Click OK to install the software in the default directory C:\3CIMPACT or enter a new path to install release 2.02.
5. Click Continue. The release notes automatically open. Review the release notes then close that window. A message box indicates successful setup.
6. If you’re installing release 2.02 from a floppy disk, copy the qa-2-02.bin file from the floppy drive to C:\3CIMPACT or the directory you created.
7. From the new program group box, double click on the 3ComImpact globe icon.
8. From the Configuration window, click Tools. Click the Firmware button.
9. From the File name list box, select qa-2-02.bin. Click OK. A confirmation message appears.
     NOTE: If the firmware file qa-2-02.bin does not appear, then it was not copied into the same directory as the release 2.02 software files, so you can locate the file in what ever directory you have it in.
10. Click OK. When the process is complete, click Exit.
