This release note describes how to connect to the Internet using an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact ISDN digital modem. These instructions assume that the 3ComImpact digital modem has already been installed and configured. For more information about the 3Com ISDN digital modem and software, see the 3ComImpact ISDN Digital Modem User Guide.

Requirements

To connect to the Internet using an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact ISDN digital modem, you will need the following:

  • Config PPP
  • MacTCP software (Apple's TCP/IP software)
  • An account with an Internet service provider (ISP)
  • Internet access software

Setting Up Your Macintosh Computer

Some Internet access software automatically configures the Macintosh TCP software, MacTCP and Config PPP. If your Internet access software does not automatically configure the Macintosh TCP software, follow these instructions. This procedure assumes that the pertinent software is already in your system folder.

Set Up MacTCP

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then MacTCP. The MacTCP screen appears, shown in Figure 2.

  2. Highlight the PPP icon.

  3. Click More. The MacTCP configuration screen appears, shown in Figure 3.

  4. Configure the fields as specified by your Internet service provider.

  5. Click OK, then close the MacTCP screen.

Set Up Config PPP

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Config PPP. The Config PPP screen appears, similar to the one shown in Figure 4.

  2. Click New. Enter the name of your ISP. You may want to enter a more descriptive name. For example, you may want to set up two types of connections to the same ISP, one for single channel 64 Kbps calls and another for Multilink dual channel 128 Kbps calls. In which case, you should enter distinguishable names such as ISP 64K and ISP 128 K.

  3. Click OK. The name you just entered appears in the PPP Server field.

  4. Set the Port Name field to the Macintosh computer port to which the 3ComImpact External digital modem is connected.

  5. Click Config. The PPP configuration screen appears, shown in Figure 5.

  6. Configure the fields as specified by your ISP.

  7. Click Authentication. The Authentication screen appears, shown in Figure 6.

  8. Enter your user name and password. Click OK.

  9. Ask your service provider whether LCP and IPCP options require changes.

  10. Click Done.

  11. Restart your Macintosh computer to allow these changes to take effect.
