Setting Up the 3ComImpact External Digital Modem Using Windows 95

Installing the 3ComImpact Digital Modem Software

    The 3ComImpact digital modem should already be physically connected to your PC and ISDN line. If not, please refer to the 3ComImpact ISDN Digital Modem User Guide for instructions.

    Before installing the software and configuring the digital modem, make sure you have the following information readily available. This information is provided to you at the time of installation of your ISDN line by the telephone company installer.

    To install the digital modem software:

    1. Insert the 3ComImpact DOS & Windows Installation Diagnostic Utilities diskette into an available floppy drive.

    2. Select Run from the Start menu. In the Run dialog box, type:

        a:setup

    3. Click OK. The configuration program is copied to the hard disk. A message box provides the status of the installation and indicates when it is complete.

    4. Double-click the 3ComImpact icon to access the 3ComImpact Configuration dialog box.

      COM1 is the default COM port.

      If the digital modem is connected to COM1, the 3ComImpact Configuration dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 1. Go on to step 5.

      If the digital modem is not connected to COM1, the COM Port Provisioning dialog box appears. Choose the COM port to which the digital modem is connected. Click Connect. The 3ComImpact Configuration dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 1.

    5. Select the type of switch, as specified by your telephone company, from the Telephone Company Switch drop-down list box.

    6. Click in the Telephone Number field in the Number 1 area and enter the telephone number to which your digital modem is connected.

      Click in the Service Profile Identifier (SPID) field and enter the corresponding SPID for the telephone number you entered in the previous step. You should have received this SPID from your telephone company.

      CAUTION: If the ISDN line has been configured as Point-to-Point and has only one telephone number, do not include the SPID.

    7. Specify which device should receive the calls coming to Telephone Number 1.

      This step only applies if your model has the internal analog fax modem installed (model 3C872). Select Phone Port or Internal Fax/Modem or both. If both boxes are checked, the internal analog fax modem and the phone will both ring, enabling you to answer using either device.

    8. If you have a second telephone number associated with your ISDN telephone line (some telephone companies require two), check the Enabled box, then enter the number and corresponding SPID in the appropriate fields in the Number 2 area.

    9. Specify which device should receive the calls coming to Telephone Number 2.

    10. Click the Configure button to download the parameters listed in steps 5 through 9 to your digital modemOs S registers.

    11. If you have changed the Telephone Company Switch type, you must reset the digital modem by turning the power switch off and then on.

    12. Verify the configuration.

    13. Check the status bar (located beneath the Help, Tools, Configure, and Exit buttons of the Configuration dialog box) to verify correct configuration. If the parameters were configured accurately and the digital modem is ready to send and receive calls, the status bar fields will appear as shown below. Note that the TEI number(s) are not configured by the user. The TEI number is provided by the telephone company for informational purposes only.

      • Layer 1: UP
      • SPID 1: Init
      • TEI 1: Number from 0 to 127
      • SPID 2: Init (if required)
      • TEI 2: Number from 0 to 127 (if required)

    14. Click Exit to leave the utility.

    This completes the configuration procedure.

Setting Up the 3ComImpact Digital Modem Using Windows 95

Setting Up Remote Connections

    This section describes how to set up remote connections. Once defined, you simply click on the name of the connection you want to establish, then click Connect. If you have a 3ComImpact digital modem with an internal analog fax modem (modem 3C872), you may want to set up at least two types of connections, one connection for digital calls and another for analog calls.

    1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking. The Dial-Up Networking window appears as shown in Figure 3.

    2. Double click the icon labeled Make New Connection to view the Make New Connection dialog box.

    3. Enter a name for this connection.

    4. Select 3COMIMPACT(DIGITAL DATA) to place digital calls.If your model has the internal analog fax modem (model 3C872), and you want to place analog calls, select 3COMIMPACT (INTERNAL FAX + DATA).

    5. Click Configure. The 3ComImpact Digital Data dialog box appears. If you selected 3COMIMPACT (INTERNAL FAX + DATA) in step 4, the 3ComImpact (Internal Fax + Data) dialog box appears.

    6. Select the Communications port to which the 3ComImpact digital modem is physically connected.

    7. Click OK.

    8. Click Next.

    9. Enter the country code (if required) area code, and phone number of the destination you want to call.

    10. Click Next.

    11. Click Finish in the New Connection Created Dialog Box.The icon representing the Dial-Up Networking connection you just created appears in the Dial-Up Networking folder.

    12. Highlight the connection you just created, then click the right mouse button. A pop-up menu appears.

    13. Select Properties, then select Server Type. Make sure the Server Type field is set to PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet. All allowed network protocols should be checked. The advanced options and TCP/IP settings may need modification. Check with your network administrator or Internet service provider.

    Placing A Call

    To place a call, double click on a connection icon. A connection dialog box appears. Click Connect.

Running the Internet Set Up Wizard

    A key feature of the Windows 95 Plus! package, the Internet Setup Wizard utility makes setting up your PC for Internet Access a breeze. The Internet Setup Wizard walks you through each required step. During this procedure, the Wizard prompts you to enter information. Ensure that you have the following information available prior to using the Internet Wizard utility.

    Obtain the following information from your Internet service provider:

    • Name of your service provider
    • Access number
    • User name
    • Password
    • IP address (if any)
    • Subnet mask (if any)
    • Domain Name Service (DNS) server and alternate DNS server

    If you want to send and receive mail through the Internet, you will also need the following information:

    • Email address
    • Address of Internet mail server

    Running the Internet Setup Wizard

    These instructions assume you have already installed Microsoft Plus! Depending on the setup of your PC, you may not see all of the dialog boxes shown in these instructions.

    1. From the Windows 95 Start Menu, select Programs then Accessories, then Internet Tools and finally Internet Setup Wizard to view the main dialog box (Figure 4).

    2. Click Next to view the Connection Type dialog box.

    3. Select Connect Using My Phone Line. Click Next to view the Connection Method dialog box.

    4. Select the second choice to connect to the Internet using an Internet service provider.

    5. Click Next. If this is the first time you are running the Internet Set Up Wizard, the Installing Files dialog box appears. Click Next. The Choose Modem dialog box appears.

    6. Select 3COMIMPACT (DIGITAL DATA) to connect to the Internet using ISDN. If you have a 3ComImpact with an internal analog modem (model 3C872), you can select either 3COMIMPACT (DIGITAL DATA) to connect to the Internet using ISDN or 3COMIMPACT (FAX + DATA) to connect to the Internet using the internal analog modem.

    7. Make your selection, then click Next to view the Service Provider dialog box.

    8. Enter the name of your Internet service provider. Click Next to view the Phone Number dialog box.

    9. Enter the country code (if required), area code, and phone number of the destination you want to call. Click Next to view the User Name and Password dialog box.

    10. Enter your User name and Password for your Internet access account. Press Next to view the IP Address dialog box.

    11. If your Internet service provider automatically assigns an IP Address, check the first option. Otherwise, check the second option and enter the IP Address and Subnet Mask information provided by your Internet access provider. Click Next to view the DNS Server dialog box.

    12. Enter the IP Address of your DNS Server. Click Next to view the Internet Mail dialog box.

    13. To send and receive email through the Internet, check the box, enter your email address and the address of your Internet mail server. Click Next to view the Internet Setup Complete dialog box.
