Setting Up the 3ComImpact External Digital Modem Using Windows NT Remote Access Service

Set Up the 3ComImpact Digital Modem Using Windows NT 3.51 RAS for a Workstation or Server

    The digital modem should already be physically connected to your PC and ISDN line. In addition, it should have already been configured using the 3ComImpact digital modem configuration program. If not, please refer to the 3ComImpact ISDN Digital Modem User Guide for instructions.

    1. Using the File Manager, locate the modem.inf file in the %SystemRoot%/System32/RAS directory and rename it to modem.inf.org.
    2. Copy the modem.inf file to the same directory as the modem.inf.org.
    3. From the Main Menu, select Control Panel, then select Network. The Network Settings dialog box appears.

    4. From the Installed Network Software list box, select Remote Access Service. The Remote Access Setup dialog box appears. (Figure 2)

    5. If a modem is already configured, select it, then click Remove.
    6. Click Add. The Add Port dialog box appears.
    7. Choose a COM port, then click OK. The Remote Access Setup message box appears.
    8. Click Cancel to manually select the digital modem.
    9. Select 3ComImpact - Digital Data then specify the port usage. Click OK. The Remote Access Setup window appears.
    10. Click Continue.
    11. Click OK. A message box appears.
    12. Click Restart Now.

    Once your system had rebooted, you are ready to use the 3ComImpact External digital modem.

Set Up A Connection to the Internet Using Windows NT 3.51 RAS

    1. From the Program Manager, select Remote Access Service.
    2. Click on the Remote Access icon. If you have not previously configured a remote access service, you will be prompted to add a new entry. If you have previously configured a remote access service, the Remote Access Service dialog box appears.
    3. Click on Add to configure a service for interconnection with the 3ComImpact Digital Modem. The Add Phone Book Entry dialog box appears.
    4. Enter your Internet Service Provider's name or network name.
    5. Enter the phone number including any extra digits required for long distance calls, and for outside line access.
    6. Select the COM port to which the 3ComImpact Digital Modem is connected.

    7. Click Modem. The Modem Settings dialog box appears. (Figure 6)

    8. Check both Enable hardware flow control and Enable modem error control. Review the other modem settings and make desired changes.
    9. Click OK.
    10. Click Network. The Network Protocol Settings dialog box appears (Figure 5).
    11. Select PPP and check TCP/IP.

    12. Click TCP/IP Settings. The PPP TCP/IP Settings dialog box appears. (Figure 6)
    13. Indicate whether the IP address is server assigned or specific. If the IP address is specific, enter the address.

    14. Indicate whether the name server addresses are server assigned or specific. If the name server addresses are specific, enter the addresses.
    15. Click OK. The Add Phone Book Entry dialog box appears.
    16. Click Security. The Security Settings dialog box appears.
    17. Select Accept any authentication including clear text.
    18. Click OK.

    You are ready to dial your Internet service provider.
