This release note describes how to connect to the Internet using an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem. These instructions assume that the 3ComImpact IQ modem has already been installed and configured. For more information about the ISDN modem and software, see the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN Modem User Guide.

Requirements

To connect to the Internet using an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem, you will need the following:

  • ConfigPPP
  • MacTCP software (Apple's TCP/IP software)
  • An account with an Internet service provider (ISP)
  • Internet access software
  • If you are running Apple's Open Transport networking software on your Macintosh computer, make sure you are running version 1.1 or higher.

Setting Up Your Macintosh Computer

Some Internet access software automatically configures MacTCP and ConfigPPP. If your Internet access software does not automatically configure the MacTCP and ConfigPPP software, follow these instructions. This procedure assumes that the pertinent software is already in your system folder.

Set Up MacTCP

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panel, then MacTCP. The MacTCP screen appears, similar to the picture shown in Figure 2.

  3. Configure the fields as specified by your Internet service provider.
  4. Click OK, then close the MacTCP screen. This completes the MacTCP setup procedure.

Set Up ConfigPPP

  1. From the Apple menu, select Chooser, then ConfigPPP. The ConfigPPP screen appears, similar to the one shown in Figure 4.

  2. Click New. Enter the name of your ISP. You may want to enter a more descriptive name. For example, you may want to set up two types of connections to the same ISP, one for single channel 64 Kbps calls and another for Multilink dual channel 128 Kbps calls. In which case, you should enter distinguishable names such as ISP 64K and ISP 128 K.

  3. Click OK. The name you just entered appears in the PPP Server field.

  4. Set the Port Name field to the Macintosh computer port to which the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem is connected.

  5. Click Config. The PPP configuration screen appears, shown in Figure 5.

  6. Select the maximum COM port speed of your computer.
  7. Enter the telephone number of your Internet service provider.
  8. Add & DO the modem initialization string.
  9. Check with your ISP to see if any other fields need to be configured.
  10. Click Authentication. The Authentication screen appears, shown in Figure 6.
  11. Configure the fields as specified by your ISP.
