Ordering ISDN Service for the 3ComImpact® IQ External ISDN Modem

MODEL: 3C882
FIRMWARE: 3.20
Last Revision: 07/02/98

How Do I Order New ISDN Service?

If you are ordering ISDN for the first time, you may choose between the following options:

  • Having 3Com order ISDN service for you, free of charge (recommended)
  • Calling your telephone company to place an ISDN order directly.

If You Are Ordering ISDN Through 3Com

Simply call 1-800-572-3Com to have your ISDN line ordered for you. 3Com SupernetAccess will provide the appropriate line parameters to your telephone company and schedule installation of your ISDN line wherever possible. Be sure to ask for the order code or order confirmation number.

If You Are Ordering ISDN Through Your Telephone Company

NOTE: The 3Com 30-day money-back guarantee on your 3C882 ISDN Modem is only applicable if you order your ISDN service using 3Com SupernetAccess.  By ordering ISDN service directly through your telephone company, you automatically void the 30-day money-back guarantee.

If you are ordering ISDN directly through your telephone company for use with the 3C882 ISDN Modem, you will want your ISDN line provisioned so that you can best take advantage of the supplementary voice features supported by the ISDN Modem, firmware version 3.20.

Bellcore has created several packages, called ISDN Ordering Codes (IOC), for choosing the line configurations that best fit your needs. For the ISDN Modem, firmware version 3.20, 3Com has two separate recommendations, depending on whether or not you want Voice Mail capability on your line:

What Are the Differences Between Packages U, V, EZ-ISDN 1, and EZ-ISDN 1A?

For the purposes of ordering your ISDN line, U and EZ-ISDN 1 are equivalent in that they offer support for the same set of supplementary voice services. In some regions, you will encounter the term IOC U or Package U; in others, you will encounter the term EZ-ISDN 1.

The same is true of Packages V and EZ-ISDN 1A -- they are identical in the set of supplementary voice services they offer.

By extension, U and EZ-ISDN 1 on the one hand, and V and EZ-ISDN 1A on the other, are also identical in the supplementary voice services they support, except that V and EZ-ISDN 1A also include support for Voice Mail. For simplicity's sake, the remainder of this document will refer to either U/EZ-ISDN 1 (for ISDN without Voice Mail) or V/EZ-ISDN 1A (for ISDN with Voice Mail), although when you place your order, you will encounter one term or the other.

What Are the Supplementary Voice Services Included in U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A?

U/EZ-ISDN 1 automatically include support for the following supplementary voice features which are also supported by the ISDN Modem, firmware version 3.20:

  • Call Waiting
  • Call Conference (or Three-Way Calling)
  • Call Transfer
  • Call Forwarding
  • Caller ID

V/EZ-ISDN 1A automatically include support for all of the above features, plus Voice Mail.

You should be aware, however, that certain constraints apply to both U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A, as explained here:

  1. Under both U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A, automatic support for Call Waiting, Call Conference, Call Transfer, and Call Forwarding applies only to the first telephone number (also called Directory Number 1). Also, under V/EZ-ISDN 1A, Voice Mail applies only to the first telephone number. Only Caller ID is automatically supported on both Directory Numbers under both packages. If, therefore, you want support for the other supplementary voice features on your second telephone number in addition to your first, you must specifically ask your telephone company to enable the following extra services on your second line:
  • For Call Waiting (as well as Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation), ask for Additional Call Offering (ACO)
  • For Call Conference (Three-Way Calling) and Call Transfer, ask for Flexible Call Offering (FCO)
  • For Call Forwarding, ask for Call Forwarding Variable
  • For Voice Mail (if you are ordering V/EZ-ISDN 1A), ask for Voice Mail

NOTE: Some telephone companies may choose to refer to the Flexible Calling features by unique terminology. In addition, there may be an extra charge to have these services added.

  1. Also under U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A, support for simultaneous voice and data on the same Directory Number is not provided. In other words, if you are using one Directory Number for a circuit-switched data call, you will not be able to place or receive a voice call (telephone or fax) on the same Directory Number at the same time.

As an example, if you start a data call (for instance, to the Internet), Directory Number 2 (DN2) is selected as the primary B channel (a data call always attempts to use DN2 first as the primary B channel).  If someone attempts to call or send you a fax on DN2, the line will be busy.  DN1, however, will still be available for a voice call.

If, on the other hand, you start by placing a voice call on DN2 and then launch a data call (which now uses DN1 because DN2 is already in use), DN 1 will then be busy if someone attempts to call or send you a fax on that line.

An example of this is illustrated below:

IQISDNgr.gif (10494 bytes)

In the example above, Directory Number (DN 1) is routed to Port 1 as a telephone line, while Directory Number (DN 2) is routed to Port 2 as a fax line (this is the default setting for the ISDN Modem). Suppose you are on a data call to the Internet. While you are connected, you will be able to receive a telephone call (because DN 1 remains free for voice calls) but not a fax call (because DN 2 is in use for the data call and is unavailable for voice calls). Likewise, if a fax happens to be coming in while you are dialing in to the Internet, you will be unable to place the call.

NOTE: If you must have simultaneous data and voice capability on the same Directory Number, refer to the section, "What If I Need Simultaneous Voice and Data Capability on Both Numbers?".

Placing the ISDN Order Through Your Telephone Company

To order ISDN service from your telephone company for the 3C882 ISDN Modem:

  1. Call your telephone company and ask for the ISDN representative.
  2. Tell the representative that you want to place an order for ISDN service for a 3ComImpact IQ External ISDN Modem.
  3. For ISDN service without Voice Mail, request that your line be provisioned according to Bellcore Capability Package U or EZ-ISDN 1.

For ISDN service with Voice Mail, request that your line be provisioned according to Bellcore Capability Package V or EZ-ISDN 1A.

NOTE: If your telephone company does not recognize these Bellcore Capability Packages or ISDN Codes, call 1-800-572-3Com and have 3Com order your ISDN line for you.

  4. If you want supplementary voice services on Directory Number 2 (your second telephone number) in addition to Directory Number 1 (supplementary voice services are automatically supported on Directory Number 1), ask to have the following extra services enabled on your second line:
    • Additional Call Offering (ACO) -- for Call Waiting (and Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation)
    • Flexible Call Offering (FCO) -- for Call Conference (Three-Way Calling) and Call Transfer
    • Call Forwarding Variable -- for Call Forwarding
    • Voice Mail -- for Voice Mail (if you are ordering V or EZ-ISDN 1A)
  1. Ask the representative which ISDN switch type your ISDN line will be using. Place a check mark on the appropriate line on the ISDN Information Sheet that follows.

NOTE: The ISDN Modem does not support supplementary voice services for Lucent Technologies 5ESS® Custom switches. If you would like to use these services, ask the representative if another switch type is available for your ISDN line.

  1. Ask the ISDN representative to provide the information you need to fill out the rest of the ISDN Information Sheet below. You will need the phone numbers provided by your ISDN representative when you configure your ISDN Modem. (The rest of the information is not necessary for the configuration itself, but you may find it helpful to have the information on hand.)

This completes the procedure for ordering your ISDN line.

What If I Already Have ISDN Service?

If you already have ISDN service installed for your ISDN Modem and you used an ISDN Ordering Code (IOC) other than U/EZ-ISDN 1 or V/EZ-ISDN 1A (for example, you may have ordered Capability Package K, M or S1, all of which were 3Com recommendations for earlier firmware versions of the ISDN Modem), you will need to make changes to your line if you wish to use all the supplementary voice services supported by the ISDN Modem, firmware version 3.20.

If You Are Currently Using Capability Package K or M

If you ordered Capability Package K or M for use with an earlier firmware version of the ISDN Modem, 3Com recommends that you update your ISDN service to Capability Package U/EZ-ISDN 1 (or V/EZ-ISDN 1A if you want Voice Mail).  Under Package K, there is automatic support for some supplementary voice services, but only one telephone number is assigned to your ISDN line (this means that you are only able to place or receive one call at a time).  Under Package M, two telephone numbers are assigned to your ISDN line, but there is no automatic support for supplementary voice services.

If You Are Currently Using Capability Package S1

If you are currently using Capability Package S1 and would like to use all or some of the supplementary voice services supported by the ISDN Modem, firmware version 3.20, 3Com recommends that you call your telephone company and ask to have the following supplementary voice services added to your existing line (either Directory Number 1, Directory Number 2, or both):

  • For Voice Mail, ask for Voice Mail
  • For Call Conference (Three-Way Calling) and Call Transfer, ask for Flexible Call Offering (FCO)
  • For Call Forwarding, ask for Call Forwarding Variable

NOTE: Some telephone companies may choose to refer to the Flexible Calling features by unique terminology. In addition, there may be an extra charge to have these services added.

If You Are Unable to Have Supplementary Voice Services Added to S1

If your telephone company does not allow piecemeal additions to your line provisioning (for example, ACO and FCO are not available on a Lucent 5ESS Custom Switch), 3Com recommends that you change your line to Package U or EZ-ISDN 1 (if you do not want Voice Mail) or Package V or EZ-ISDN 1A (if you want Voice Mail).

If you make this change, however, recall that Packages U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A do not provide automatic support for simultaneous voice and data on the same Directory Number.   For an explanation of the exact differences between Packages S1, U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A, refer to the section, "How S1 Differs from U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A."

If you must have simultaneous voice and data on the same Directory Number, refer to the section, "What If I Need Simultaneous Voice and Data Capability on Both Numbers?"

How S1 Differs from U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A

Capability Package S1 is a special ordering code which provides support for simultaneous voice and data on the same Directory Number where Packages U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A do not.   S1 also provides Additional Call Offering (ACO) -- which allows for Call Waiting and Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation -- on both telephone numbers, whereas U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A provide ACO automatically on Directory Number 1 only.

S1 does not, however, provide support for the other supplementary voice features supported by the ISDN Modem (Call Conference, Call Transfer, and Call Forwarding) which are available under U/EZ-ISDN 1 and V/EZ-ISDN 1A. (Note, also, that S1 does not automatically support Voice Mail.)

All three ordering codes, S1, U/EZ-ISDN 1, and V/EZ-ISDN 1A, provide automatic support for Caller ID on both Directory Numbers.

What If I Need Simultaneous Voice and Data Capability on Both Numbers?

If you must have the ability to place a circuit-switched data and voice call simultaneously on the same Directory Number, you have two alternatives, depending on the ISDN switch type used by your telephone company.

For Lucent Technologies 5ESS® and Siemens EWSD Switches

If your ISDN line is provisioned on a Lucent 5ESS or Siemens EWSD switch, you have the following options:

Option 1. Start with S1 and Add Supplementary Voice Services -- Ask your telephone company to provision your line with Bellcore Capability Package S1. S1 is a special ordering code which allows for simultaneous voice and data on the same Directory Number. It also allows Call Waiting and Caller ID on both Directory Numbers. It does not, however, automatically include support for Voice Mail, Call Conference, Call Transfer and Call Forwarding.

Next, ask for the supplementary voice features which are not included with S1 to be added to your line piecemeal. Refer to the section, "If You Are Currently Using Capability Package S1" for instructions.

Be aware, however, that not all telephone companies will allow you to add these extra features to S1 and that some telephone companies may charge you additional installation fees for special ordering codes such as S1.

Option 2. Start with U/EZ-ISDN 1 or V/EZ-ISDN 1A and Add Simultaneous Voice and Data -- Ask your telephone company to provision your line with Bellcore Capability Package U or EZ-ISDN 1 (or V or EZ-ISDN 1A, if you want Voice Mail).

Next, ask to have the following parameter set to 2:

  • For Lucent 5ESS:
Maximum B Channel" (MAXBCHL)
  • For Siemens EWSD:
Number of B Channels Per Call Type Per Office Equipment Directory Number (also known as "NBCCTOEDN" or "BCHCT")

For Nortel DMS-100® Switches

If your line is provisioned on a Nortel DMS-100® switch, then regardless of the ISDN Ordering Code you choose, you cannot have simultaneous voice and data on the same phone number because of a limitation with the central office switches.

Note: 5ESS is a registered trademark of Lucent Technologies; DMS-100 is a registered trademark of Nortel.
