Setting Up 3ComImpact IQ ISDN Modem Using Windows 95

Before You Begin
You will need the 3ComImpact IQ Windows and DOS Installation Diagnostic Utilities diskette provided in your 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem package. Also, you should have already installed Windows 95, Microsoft Plus! and the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem hardware and software.
Setting up the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN Modem Using Windows 95 Plug and Play
These instructions assume you are installing a modem for the first time using Windows 95. To set up the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem:
- Make sure that the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem is powered up and physically connected to your PC, and then reboot your PC. The New Hardware Found dialog box appears as shown in Figure 1.

- Select the Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer option. Click OK. The Install From Disk dialog box appears.
- Insert the 3ComImpact IQ Windows & DOS Installation Diagnostic Utilities diskette into an available floppy drive. Click OK. The Select Device dialog box appears.
- Select 3ComImpact IQ and then click OK.
If you are planning to run your computer at the maximum 230.4 Kbps baud rate, you must set up the driver that allows a maximum 230.4 Kbps baud rate. To do so, go on to step 5. Note that to obtain the maximum 230.4 Kbps baud rate, your PC may need an enhanced serial port card and COM port software which supports 230.4 Kbps.
Otherwise, if you plan to run your computer at baud rates up to 115.2 Kbps, the process is complete. You can set up a connection from which you can place calls. If you want to connect to the Internet, refer to Running the Internet Set Up Wizard. For other remote connections, refer to Setting Up Remote Connections.
- From the Control Panel dialog box, double click on the Modems icon. The Modems Properties dialog box appears.
- Click Add. The Install New Modem dialog box appears.
- Check the box to prevent automatic detection of the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem.
- Click Next. The Modem Manufacturers and Models dialog appears.
- From the Manufacturers list box, select 3COM. From the Models list box, select 3ComImpact IQ 230K.
- Click Next.
- Select the appropriate COM port.
- Click Next. A dialog box indicates successful setup.
- Click Finish.
This completes the setup procedure.
You can set up a connection from which you can place calls. If you want to connect to the Internet, refer to Running the Internet Set Up Wizard. For other remote connections, refer to Setting Up Remote Connections.
Setting Up Remote Connections
- From the Start menu, select Programs, then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking. The Dial-Up Networking dialog box appears as shown in Figure 2.

- Double click the icon labeled Make New Connection to view the Make New Connection dialog box.
- Enter a name for this connection.
- Select 3ComImpact IQ for baud rates up to 115.2 Kbps or 3ComImpact IQ 230 K for a baud rate of 230.4 Kbps.
- Click Configure. The 3ComImpact IQ dialog box appears.
- Select the Communications port to which the ISDN modem is physically connected.
- Click OK.
- Click Next.
- Enter the country code (if required) area code, and phone number of the destination you want to call.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish in the New Connection Created Dialog Box. The icon representing the Dial-Up Networking connection you just created appears in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
- Highlight the connection you just created, then click the right mouse button. A pop-up menu appears.
- Select Properties, then select Server Type. Make sure the Server Type field is set to PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet. All allowed network protocols should be checked. The advanced options and TCP/IP settings may need modification. Check with your network administrator or Internet service provider. Typically, under Advanced options, you will need to check Log on to network and Enable software compression.
Placing A Call
To place a call, double click on a connection icon. A connection dialog box appears. Click Connect.
Running the Internet Set Up Wizard
A key feature of the Windows 95 Plus! package, the Internet Setup Wizard utility makes setting up your PC for Internet Access a breeze. The Internet Setup Wizard walks you through each required step. During this procedure, the Wizard prompts you to enter information. Ensure that you have the following information available prior to using the Internet Wizard utility.
Obtain the following information from your Internet service provider:
- Name of your service provider
- Access number
- User name
- Password
- IP address (if any)
- Subnet mask (if any)
- Domain Name Service (DNS) server and alternate DNS server
If you want to send and receive mail through the Internet, you will also need the following information:
- Email address
- Address of Internet mail server
Running the Internet Setup Wizard
These instructions assume you have already installed Microsoft Plus! Depending on the setup of your PC, you may not see all of the dialog boxes shown in these instructions.
- From the Windows 95 Start Menu, select Programs then Accessories, then Internet Tools and finally Internet Setup Wizard to view the main dialog box (Figure 3).

- Click Next to view the Connection Type dialog box.
- Select Connect Using My Phone Line. Click Next to view the Connection Method dialog box.
- Select your preference.
(Note that if you are setting up an account with an Internet service provider for the first time, you will likely have to do so using an analog modem.)
- Click Next. If this is the first time you are running the Internet Set Up Wizard, the Installing Files dialog box appears. Click Next. The Choose Modem dialog box appears.
- Select 3ComImpact IQ to connect to the Internet using ISDN.
- Make your selection, then click Next to view the Service Provider dialog box.
- Enter the name of your Internet service provider. Click Next to view the Phone Number dialog box.
- Enter the country code (if required), area code, and phone number of the destination you want to call. Click Next to view the User Name and Password dialog box.
- Enter your User name and Password for your Internet access account. Press Next to view the IP Address dialog box.
- If your Internet service provider automatically assigns an IP Address, check the first option. Otherwise, check the second option and enter the IP Address and Subnet Mask information provided by your Internet access provider. Click Next to view the DNS Server dialog box.
- Enter the IP Address of your DNS Server. Click Next to view the Internet Mail dialog box.
- To send and receive email through the Internet, check the box, enter your email address and the address of your Internet mail server. Click Next to view the Internet Setup Complete dialog box.
This completes the Internet setup procedure.
