Setting Up ConfigPPP and MacTCP for Use With the 3ComImpact IQ External ISDN Modem
Last Revision: 7/14/97
This document describes setting up Internet access using Config PPP and MacTCP for use with an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact IQ External ISDN modem. Newer Macintosh operating systems (System 7.5.3 and later) may utilize Apple's Open Transport networking software instead of MacTCP; refer to "Setting Up Internet Access with Apple's Open Transport" for assistance.
Note: FreePPP, a Freeware Internet access program, may also be used in conjunction with MacTCP. Refer to the above mentioned document "Setting Up Internet Access with Apple's Open Transport" for assistance.
These instructions assume that the 3ComImpact IQ modem has already been installed and configured. For more information about the ISDN modem and software, refer to the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN Modem User Guide.
Introduction
The 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem provides Internet access, as shown in Figure 1.

Requirements
To connect to the Internet using an Apple Macintosh computer and the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem, you will need the following:
Config PPP software
MacTCP software
An account with an Internet service provider (ISP)
A Web browser (i.e., Netscape or Microsoft Explorer)
Setting Up Your Macintosh Computer
Some Internet access software automatically configures MacTCP. If your Internet access software does not automatically configure this for you, follow these instructions. This procedure assumes that the pertinent software is already installed in your system folder.
Set Up Using MacTCP and Config PPP
The first step it to set up MacTCP.
1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then MacTCP. The MacTCP screen appears, similar to the picture shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 MacTCP Screen
2. Highlight the PPP icon and then click More. The MacTCP configuration screen opens, shown in Figure 3.

3. Configure the fields as specified by your Internet service provider.
4. Click OK, and then close the MacTCP screen. This completes the MacTCP setup procedure.
Set Up Config PPP
Config PPP is the software used to dial your Internet service provider.
1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Config PPP. The Config PPP screen appears, similar to the one shown in Figure 4.

2. Click New. Enter the name of your ISP. Or you may want to enter a more descriptive name. For example, you may want to set up two types of connections to the same ISP, one for single channel 64 Kbps calls and another for Multilink dual channel 128 Kbps calls. In this case, you should enter distinguishable names such as ISP 64K and ISP 128K.
3. Click OK. The name you just entered appears in the PPP Server field.
4. Set the Port Name field to the Macintosh computer port to which the 3ComImpact IQ ISDN modem is connected.
5. Click Config. The PPP configuration screen appears, shown in Figure 5.

6. Select the maximum COM port speed of your computer.
7. Set Flow Control to CTS & RTS (DTR).
8. Enter the telephone number of your Internet service provider.
9. Add & DO to the modem initialization string.
NOTE: You may choose to set up unique modem configurations for each dial up Account profile (i.e., one Multilink PPP dial up account and one 64K Single link dial up). In this case, you would need to set specific modem init strings for each Account.
For example, to set up a specific account profile for Multilink PPP calls, you would add "S80=1" to the end of any existing init string; your complete init string would then read "at&d0S80=1".
10. Check with your ISP to see if any other fields need to be configured.
11. Click Authentication. The Authentication screen appears, shown in Figure 6.

12. Enter your user name and password assigned by your Internet service provider. Click OK.
13. Restart your Macintosh computer to allow these changes to take effect.
14. To go on-line, open the Config PPP control panel and click Open.
Once your connection has been established, you may open any web browser, such as Netscape or Microsoft's Internet Explorer, to access the Internet.
