Call Routing & Analog Telephone/Facsimile Support on the 3ComImpact IQLast Revision: 07/29/97 Model Number: 3C882 Please review this document if you have any questions on the functionality of the analog ports of the 3ComImapct IQ. This document will help you understand call routing, and will assist you in troubleshooting some common issues that may occur with the modems analog ports. Analog Call Routing The enclosed table will provide you with an overview of all the routing options possible on the analog ports of the 3ComImpact IQ. By default , calls to the first telephone number (DN1) ring the device attached to Port 1, and calls to the second telephone number (DN2) ring the device attached to Port 2 (S63=9).
Notes: Please note that analog call routing is dependent upon correct configuration of your ISDN line. I.e., both B-channels must be configured for circuit-switched voice and data. In addition, Max B-channel must be set to 2. For incoming DynamicDynamica Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) to work properly, Additional Call Offering (ACO) has to be enabled on both B-channels (or telephone numbers). Tip: If you would like to take advantage of the flexible calling features added in Release 3.10 (conference, hold, drop, transfer), order ISDN Line Ordering Package S1 and ask your telephone company to add flexible calling features to Package S1. 1. The default setting for 3.10 has changed for ISDN the lines with two telephone numbers. The new default they are now set asis S63=9 (DN1 goes to Port 1 and DN2 goes to Port 2) . PreviouselyThe default in Release 3.00 was they were set to S63=15 which enables calls to/from both telephone numbers to both analog ports. 2. to/from both analog ports). There is not automatic default for a single line. this step should be removed. 3. Each Check Box in the Configuration Utility will enable both incoming and outgoing calls. 4. If no device is connected to a particular phone port, you dont have to make any changes to the corresponding Check Box (i.e., you can leave the phone port enabled). 5. To block all analog calls (incoming/outgoing) to both phone ports, set S63=0. 6. To block analog calls during MLPPP, either incoming or outgoing , refer to the new register settings for S70 which are available in 3.10. Frequently Asked Questions Can we add a question for Caller ID box on the analog ports?? Q: Can I connect an external Caller ID device to the modems analog ports? A: No, the 3ComImpact IQ supports call logging which cannot be communicated through the analog ports. Please refer to your manual for further information on call logging. Q: How many devices can be attached to one of the 3C882 ISDN modems analog phone ports? A: Typically you can connect up the three analog devices (telephone, fax, analog modem) on each port using an RJ-11 splitter. The number of devices is dependent on the REN of each device. All totaled they cant exceed REN=3 per port. The analog devices have to be within 200 feet. Although you can connect multiple devices to each port, you can place only one phone call at a time per port. Some devices such as speaker phones require more power, thus reducing the number of devices which can be simultaneously connected to the analog voice port. Q: Can I continue to use my analog modem with the 3C882 ISDN modemmodem? A: Yes, you can continue to use your analog modem, either through an analog line or through one of the voice ports on the 3C882 modem, but make sure that your are not using the same COM port and IRQ signal (PC users) for two separate modems. Also, depending on your operating system, you may only be able to use one modem at a time, since many operating systems do not let you share the COM (PC users) or Modem (Macintosh) port drivers. Q: Why cant I place or receive voice calls? A: The 3C882 ISDN modem is designed to operate with telephones that are compatible with the original AT&T 2500 touch-tone telephone standard. If you are attempting to use a portable telephone that does not confirm to the AT&T 2500 touch-tone telephone standard, you may not be able to place and/or receive voice calls. Also, check with your local telephone company to ensure that your ISDN line has been provisioned for circuit switched voice on both B-channels. If neither of these is the problem, it may be that your call routing (S63) isnt set properly or that S70 is disabled. Q: Will the 3ComImpact IQ work with all analog telephones, facsimiles and answering machines? A: The 3ComImpact IQ will work with all basic analog phones, most speaker phones, and most cordless phones. The modem will also work with most facsimile and answering machines. Interoperability depends on the required REN of the analog equipment (maximum support of the 3ComImpact IQ is for REN=3). 3Com has found that some manufacturer(s) devices do not recognize the ringing signal that is generated by some ISDN modems, including the 3ComImpact IQ. Q: How do I find out what the required REN of my analog equipment is? A: You should find a label on the bottom of most telephones and facsimiles which clearly states the REN, as well as ringing voltage requirements. Other equipment will specify these values in the user manual. Q: What are the ringing voltages on the 3ComImpact IQ? A: The 3ComImpact IQ is able to generate a ringing voltage of 60 Volts. Q: Will the 3ComImpact IQ stay connected when the answering equipment exhibits "hook bounce" symptoms? What call are we referring to here? This is unclear to me. A: No, the 3ComImpact IQ will disconnect the call. Hook bounce consists of taking analog equipmentequipoment off-hook, on-hook and off-hook again in quick succession. This symptom is sometimes seen with answering machines. Q: Why is it that I can receive voice and data calls but cannot place them? A: You may be on a private network (such as Centrex). (You should be able to find out this information from your telecommunications coordinator.) If this is the case, you may need to prefix all dialed numbers with a digit such as 9. This will give you the capability of placing calls to destinations outside your private network. Also, if you have an MLPPP call established and you cannot place or receive a call, check S70. You may have calls disabled. Some switches also requires that you dial a 1 plus area code, even for local calls. Q: Why cant I place any long distance calls? A: Check with your ISDN line provider to make sure that a long distance carrier (e.g., AT&T, MCI, Sprint) was selected for your new ISDN line. Q: Why cant I use my fax machine? A: Make sure you are using a Group 3 fax machine. Check the documentation which came with your fax machine. Q: Why is it that I can dial my phone operator (by pressing zero) but I cannot dial anyone else or receive any voice calls? A: Ask your telecommunications coordinator if you are on a private network (e.g., Centrex). If so, you typically need to dial a number such as 9 before you can place a call. Also, make sure that your telephone conforms to the AT&T 2500 touch-tone telephone standard. If it does, verify that it is working properly by connecting it to another telephone jack or by trying another telephone in its place. Q: Can I plug my ISDN telephone into the 3C882 ISDN modems analog phone port? A: No, the phone ports only work with analog devices. Q: Why doesnt incoming Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA, also referred to as "call bouncing") work? A: Your ISDN line must support Additional Call Offering (ACO) to allow incoming DBA to work. Check with your telephone company to determine whether or not your ISDN line supports this feature and, if not, how to have this feature added to your ISDN line. If your ISDN line does support ACO, make sure that DBA is enabled (it is enabled by default). If you think it may be disabled, enable DBA by using a terminal emulation program to send the following command to the 3C882 ISDN modem: ATS70=1 for R3.00, or ATS70=3 for R3.10. If you have a 3ComImpact IQ running R3.00, 3Com recommends that you upgrade to R3.10. Since there is an issue with incoming DBA on the 2nd port, cant we just eliminate mentioning R3.00 and recommend they upgrade to R3.10. |
