Setting Up The 3ComImpact (3C871/2 and 3C882) ISDN External Digital Modems Utilizing the impact.inf File for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Please note that this document doesn't cover the 3ComImpact GUI installation and ISDN configuration. Follow the Quick Start Instructions and Chapter 2 (3C87x) or Chapter 3 (3C882) of your Manual for further instructions.

  1. Click on Start, select Settings, and open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on Modems.

  2. If you have to dial a prefix, or use other special dial instructions, click on Dialing Properties and edit all relevant fields. Return to the above screen and click on Add.

  3. Check the "Don't detect my modem; I will select from a list" box and click on Next.

  4. Please note that you will only see a 3Com entry if you've previously installed a 3Com modem. Click on Have Disk. Insert the 3ComImpact Windows Installation and Diagnostics floppy in drive a:\. Click on Browse and highlight the impact.inf file, and click on Open; click OK. The following screen appears:

  5. The models listed on this screen depend on the particular 3ComImpact model you purchased. Refer to your manual to find out which model you purchased. Select the 3ComImpact Digital Data modem if you have a 3C871 or 3C872 and plan to use your 3ComImpact's ISDN functionality. Select the 3ComImpact IQ if you've purchased a 3C882, and you are planning to use your digital modem in Autobaud mode. Select the 3ComImpact IQ 230K if you've purchased a 3C882, and use an accelerated serial port driver card purchased separately and would like to use the 230.4 Kbps feature of the IQ (this selection will only work at 230.4 Kbps). Finally, if you've purchased a 3C872 and would like to define a modem selection for analog connections using the built-in V.32bis analog modem, select the 3ComImpact plus Int. Faxmodem entry. Click on Next.

  6. Select the COM port to which you have connected the 3ComImpact. Click on Next. You should receive a message indicating that the modem installation was successful. Click on Finish. You are now ready to configure your dial-up connection.

Setting Up Dial-Up Networking With The 3ComImpact (3C871/3C872/3C882) ISDN External Digital Modems

The following instructions provide you with an example how to set up your Internet connection using Windows NT 4.0 Dial-Up Networking and the 3ComImpact. Please note the Dial-Up Networking setup depends on your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) server equipment setup and can vary widely. Refer to your ISP account information and, if necessary check with your ISP for further or specialized instructions.

  1. Click on Start, select Programs, then select Accessories, and open Dial-Up Networking. If you have previously configured a Dial-Up Networking connection, that connection will appear. Click on New to add your 3ComImpact connection. If you have not configured a Dial-Up Networking connection before, you will receive a message indicating that your phonebook is empty. Click on OK to add an entry. The following screen appears:

  2. Name your connection, and click on Next.

  3. Select the "I'm calling the Internet" box, and click on Next.

  4. Enter your ISP's ISDN access number, and click on Next. This will complete the initial ISP Dial-Up Networking definition. On the next screen, click Finish. The following screen appears:

  5. You now have an opportunity to verify various settings of your Dial-Up Networking connection. Click on More, and select Edit entry and modem properties.

  6. Verify your ISP's ISDN access number and your modem selection. Click on Server.

  7. Make sure that TCP/IP is selected. If you are dialing into a LAN, enable IPX/SPX and NetBEUI as required. Check with your ISP to verify whether compression is supported. Disable Software compression if your ISP recommends for you to do so. Click on TCP/IP Settings.

  8. If your ISP assigned you an IP address, click on Specify an IP address and enter it here. In most cases your ISP will provide you with a dynamic IP address - leave the setting at Server assigned IP address. Then enter your DNS and WINS server addresses if required (check your ISP account information for these addresses). Again, verify that your ISP supports IP header compression and disable if required. Click on OK.

  9. Verify that the Script is set to None.

  10. Change the Authentication method to "Accept any authentication, including clear text." Click OK. Note: the 3ComImpacts do not support X.25, therefore no changes are required on the X.25 screen.

  11. You are now ready to connect to your ISP using the 3ComImpact.
